The City of Broken Dreams at BALTIC

Art Therapy in Galleries & Museums: Exploring the possibilities of a contemporary art gallery as an inspiring context for art therapy with young people.

For the first ever National Museums and Wellbeing Week (29 February – 6 March 2016), we celebrated art therapy in museums and galleries…

The City of Broken Dreams was part of an art therapy project involving the Northumberland and Newcastle Gateshead Children and Young Peoples’ Services and BALTIC.

BALTIC is a major international centre for contemporary art situated on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, England. BALTIC has gained an international reputation for its commissioning of cutting-edge temporary exhibitions. It presents a distinctive and ambitious programme of exhibitions and events, and is a world leader in the presentation and commissioning of contemporary visual art. Housed in a landmark ex-industrial building, BALTIC is the UK’s largest dedicated contemporary art institution.

This project explored the possibilities of a contemporary art gallery as an inspiring context for art therapy.

Working alongside a BALTIC artist and two art therapists, seven young people explored their thoughts and feelings inspired by Fiona Tan’s exhibition DEPOT at BALTIC.
