Art therapists awards 2024

We’re excited to announce we have developed two new awards to celebrate and recognise the inspiring work that is being undertaken by art therapists across the UK!

Deadline: 30 June 2024, 23:59 GMT.

The awards

Innovation

Innovation is the creative and strategic integration of new ideas, methods, and approaches to enhance the effectiveness and scope of therapeutic practice. It goes beyond traditional techniques, incorporating novel concepts, tools, or technologies to address the evolving needs of clients and the broader context of the settings.

This award will celebrate an individual or team of art therapists who have developed innovative clinical practice, research, or delivered art therapy in a way that has had a profound impact.

Inclusive and anti-oppressive practice

Inclusion and anti-oppressive practice is an intentional approach that values diversity, promotes equity, and actively works towards dismantling systemic barriers to well-being.

This award will recognize an individual or team of art therapists who have made significant contributions to improving the inclusive nature of service delivery, the development anti-oppressive practices, or provided art therapy to communities that may not have traditionally accessed art therapy.

The awards panel

This year the awards panel will be:

  • Professor Carolyn McDonald, Chief Allied Health Professions Officer, Scotland
  • Daniel Regan, EDI advisor, BAAT
  • Professor Di Waller OBE, honorary president, BAAT
  • Claire Louise Vaculik, chair, BAAT
  • Catherine Stevens, Council member, BAAT
  • Simi Warah, Council member, BAAT
  • Liliana Montoya de la Cruz, Council member, BAAT

Review process and notification of outcomes

Once the call for nominations has closed, all nominations will be reviewed by staff initially – to ensure that nominees are eligible and meet criteria for the award.

The awards panel will then convene and review nominations, seeking further contact with the referees, or undertaking peer review to better understand the work and its place within that practice area (if this is needed).

Nominations will then be shortlisted, with three finalists chosen for each award.

Finalists will be announced in our Bulletin and on our website, with details of their work and achievements shared; unsuccessful nominations will be notified by email.

In the autumn, the awards panel will meet again to review the finalists and choose a winner for each award.

Council will review and formally approve winners recommended by the awards panel at the autumn meeting.

Winners will be announced publicly at our annual conference 2024 at the Wellcome Collection.

Preview the questions before you start, so that you can gather any information and supporting material that you might need.

What makes a good nomination?

We want to receive nominations for the very best candidates that represent the full diversity of the art therapy community across the UK, from a broad range of trainings, sectors and practice areas, and career stages.

When making your nomination, it is important that you know the work of the nominee well enough to build a strong case for why they are deserving of the award. The Awards Panel is looking for a compelling account of the importance of the nominee’s work, their outstanding achievements, and contributions to art therapy.

A good nomination should describe as well as possible the difference that the nominee’s contribution has made. Consider what distinguishes your nominee from others doing similar work and provide details to support these claims.
