Mindful activity:
Welcoming in the light
In spring, something special happens called the Spring Equinox. This is when the sun shines directly on the equator—the middle of the Earth. Because of this, almost everyone in the world gets the same amount of light and dark—12 hours each.
After this day, people living in the top half of the world (like us in the UK) start getting more daylight. Things feel brighter and more hopeful.
This season, let’s do a calm and mindful activity to welcome the light and feel that hope growing inside us.

What you’ll do
This is something for you to try. Mindful activities work for some people, but not for everyone. See if you like it!
- Find somewhere comfortable to sit, by a window or a safe place outside where you can greet the sun.
2. Close your eyes.
3. Be mindful of any feelings of tension in your body and try to relax those parts, as you breathe gently in and out through your nose.
4. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face.
5. As you feel the warmth, remind yourself that the days are getting longer and that, with the light, comes hope.
6. Sit like this for as long as you like, or until you feel relaxed.
You could also try…
Try doing this mindful activity while listening to relaxing music, a nature soundtrack, or just the sounds of the natural world around you, focusing on what you can hear as well as the warmth of the sun.
As a starting point, you could listen to this to this dawn chorus of bird song, produced by The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
Or listen to this song, ‘Lark Ascending’ by Vaughn Williams.
