Mindful activity:
Welcoming in the light

In the spring, our planet experiences balance when the sun crosses the equator, moving south to north. Known as the Spring Equinox, this is the moment when the whole world experiences 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. After this, those of us in the northern hemisphere will have more light in our lives. This is a time of hope.

This season’s mindful activity encourages you to welcome in the light and hope.

What you’ll do

  1. Find somewhere comfortable to sit, by a window or a safe place outside where you can greet the sun.

2. Close your eyes.

3. Be mindful of any feelings of tension in your body and try to relax those parts, as you breathe gently in and out through your nose.

4. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face.

5. As you feel the warmth, remind yourself that the days are getting longer and that, with the light, comes hope.

6. Sit like this for as long as you like, or until you feel relaxed.

You could also try…

Try doing this mindful activity while listening to relaxing music, a nature soundtrack, or just the sounds of the natural world around you, focusing on what you can hear as well as the warmth of the sun.

As a starting point, you could listen to this to this dawn chorus of bird song, produced by The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Or listen to this song, ‘Lark Ascending’ by Vaughn Williams.
