Just Outside The Goldilocks Zone (2022), oil on canvas

Artist statement

I have personal and artistic interest in ambiguity and the neuroscience of perception. My oil painting Just Outside The Goldilocks Zone was made between 2019 and 2022. I was aiming to create purposefully ambiguous shapes, content that encourages viewers to ‘fill in the gaps’, perhaps with their prior experiences or biases.

Maybe the turquoise shapes are Jellyfish, or Peacocks, or both, or neither. I was thinking of invisible threats and the fragility of our equilibrium and ecosystem, and how potentially oncoming, significant changes to our world, might mean that we eventually exist just outside the current goldilocks zone.
