Flourish

Flourish (2024), collage

Artist statement

Flourish was created while reflecting on the idea of ‘playing small’, which can happen when one is motivated by insecurity and low self-worth. This leads to holding back one’s ability, avoiding risks and running from opportunity. I imagined what it might look like to ‘play big’. Through this image, I wanted to explore the question ‘What might it look like to break out of the box I so often put myself in, and grow as an artist, art therapist, researcher and more?’

I’m currently pursuing a PhD in art therapy at the Dominican University of California. I believe in the power of art as both a mirror and a window, reflecting and revealing our internal worlds. In my personal art making I use art to navigate feelings, ask questions and tell stories.

What might it look like to break out of the box I so often put myself in, and grow as an artist, art therapist, researcher and more?
