Mentalisation-based art therapy foundations (self-study)

Mentalisation-based art therapy can help adults living with complex emotional needs and children experiencing social, emotional and mental health difficulties regulate emotions, improve relationships, and reduce distress. This self-study course gives art therapists foundational knowledge to integrate mentalisation-based principles into practice.

What is mentalisation-based art therapy?

Mentalisation-based art therapy combines mentalisation-based therapy principles with art therapy practice. Using art-making to externalise emotions and mental states, people explore and reflect on their experiences in conversation with the art therapist. This highly relational process builds trust and fosters safe exploration, helping people better understand their own and others’ mental states, regulate their emotions, improve relationships, and reduce emotional distress.
