Embracing cultural and ethnic diversity in art therapy
This course aims to allow a safe space to explore why #BlackLivesMatter is not just a hashtag, consider insights and examples of cultural indifference as viewed from the perspective of a Black British art therapist, and give practitioners the confidence to move from necessary self-reflection to asking some of those difficult questions of clients.
We all have ‘blind-spots’ in our cultural awareness, reinforced by our upbringing, age, geographical locations, and personal values. Many of these we may be aware of, and possibly even openly own. However, when we are not so willing to accept or discuss some of our blind-spots, they may subconsciously influence our relationships and impact our therapeutic work.
Many children, young people, and adults who use art therapy services may have a strong sense of their ‘cultural self’. Particularly those who are displaced in another culture that is not their homeland and are now communicating in a language that is not their mother tongue.
What you will learn
This course will equip you with the potential and confidence to ensure that, after asking the difficult questions to ensure necessary self-reflection, you can ask some of those difficult questions of your clients. The day will help you to further consider what more we could do (personally and professionally) to support our clients from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- understand how cultural bias can affect psychological therapy
- define your personal influences and identify areas of cultural bias
- use existing therapy skills to approach open cultural discussions with service users
How you will learn:
The course includes:
- Presentations on cultural awareness, bias, and indifference.
- Art making to explore and discuss our own sense of our cultural selves as well as safely explore our areas of personal bias.
- Guidance on what is considered appropriate use of language and how and when to bring up cultural references and differences.
