Free CPD for members: sustaining an art therapy career - a guide for longer working lives

While training prepares us in beginning and developing our work, this course will look at how to sustain a career as an art therapist, how to find new directions, or bring a long career to a close.

What you will learn

The session will draw on arts therapy, psychotherapy and psychology literature, as well as change management theory and examples from the lives and work of artists.

We will explore the three main career stages: sustaining current work; finding new directions; and endings. We will consider the issues of each stage, and how we can apply our skills and creativity as arts therapists to manage them and gain further resources to look after ourselves and re-imagine new possibilities.

This course will offer the opportunity to:

  • Recognise the key issues of each career stage.
  • Practice three key strategies to prepare for changing career and life stages, and negotiate transitions between them.
  • Identify skills and gain resources to look after ourselves in an age of longer working lives, ‘multiple careers’ and beyond.
