Perinatal art therapy

This course introduces art therapy practice within the perinatal period (roughly from pregnancy to two years old). It's a time of enormous change, when the emotional and mental health of parents impacts infant wellbeing, and support can be crucial.

Art therapy during the perinatal period

Research and clinical experience suggest that themes of loss, grief, and the fear of ‘maternal failure’ are central to perinatal distress and that the multi-vocal nature of images in art psychotherapy is well suited to helping parents undergoing this transition.

What you will learn

A systemic biopsychosocial approach will be presented, which considers the intersectional factors contributing to perinatal distress. We will also look at psychodynamic theory and practice, and early relational development.

We will offer examples of how art psychotherapy can help parents to integrate their conscious and unconscious experiences, promoting the capacity to psychologically hold their baby.

The course covers:

  • factors contributing to perinatal distress, and its impacts on the mental health of parents and infants
  • the benefits of art therapy during this period
  • how art materials, image making, and creativity can support parents in the perinatal period.

How you will learn

The course will include:

  • lecture-style inputs introducing relevant theoretical concepts and research findings
  • case presentations and vignettes
  • small group discussions
  • creative reflective activities featuring time for art-making and looking at images
  • time for questions and discussion with the larger group

Tutors

Bridget Grant and Abigail Robertson

Bridget is an art therapist and lecturer in Art Psychotherapy on the MSc Art Psychotherapy training at Queen Margaret University. Bridget worked for eight years as an art therapist in a perinatal service, undertaking individual, group and parent-infant dyadic art therapy with the parents who used the service. She continues to undertake clinical supervision for the service.

Abigail is an art psychotherapist and COSCA accredited supervisor. Her current work is within a perinatal service as a Senior Art Therapist supporting pregnant clients and recent parents.

I found the whole course to be exceptionally well organised, presented and facilitated, it reminded me once again why I love the profession.
