Processing (2023), cyanoytpe prints with found objects

Artist statement

Processing’ explores both the process of art therapy and the processing of an individual’s story. It looks at how various aspects come into focus at different times and in different ways, and how all form part of the whole.

I used both natural and found elements, representing the wide variety of influences on personal stories. Making cyanotypes with the sun, I facilitate the practice but can’t control it – so many factors come into play and influence the processing and output. There’s a collaboration and connection between the elements and the environment, which I am a part of and a witness to.

As with therapeutic work, the process needs its own time, develops at its own pace and in its own unique way. The process and outcomes can often be unexpected and offer insights which couldn’t have been predicted.

Process-driven printmaking invites a sense of curiosity which I also really value in my work as an art therapist and supervisor.
