Art therapy with groups of children

This course will support your understanding of what to consider in order to set up and facilitate art psychotherapy groups with primary age children within schools and child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).

About this area of art therapy

There is an increased demand for art psychotherapy groups in both schools and CAMHS services. Art psychotherapy groups are often thought of as a cost-effective and useful interventions. However, careful considerations are recommended to increase the safety and effectiveness of groups.

Art psychotherapy groups can be helpful for children by supporting social learning, encouraging expression of experiences through art, and facilitating articulation of thoughts and feelings.

What will you learn

This course will outline step-by-step considerations from assessment, structuring the group sessions, to evaluating your intervention in your current setting.

It is important to consider the individuals suitability for the group and allow the wider system around the child in supporting your assessment and evaluation process. The course will help you think about how to best do this within the boundaries of confidentiality, and address limitations and contraindications.

The course covers:

  • Understanding what to considering when facilitating an art psychotherapy group for children in primary schools and or CAMHS services.
  • Where to start and how to evaluate your group intervention.
  • Using existing art therapy skills and experience in art psychotherapy in a group intervention.

How will you learn

Learning will be through presentations, case material, experiential exercises, and small group reflection spaces to help you feel confident in implementing directives and offering an art psychotherapy group service.
