Online art therapy approaches and methods

Learn more about approaches and methods to use online in your art therapy practice and how to create a safe and secure virtual environment. The course will introduce you to web-based digital art media programs to incorporate into individual and group art therapy work, and how you can use these art-based tools therapeutically.

Accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, many in the art therapy community around the world were quickly driven to use online and web-based platforms for working with service users, teaching, supervising, and training. Over the last two years, art therapists have risen to this situation, learning how to use and adapt to virtual platforms to support service users, students, supervisees, and professionals.

However, challenges do exist with online environments. Attention to safety, confidentiality, external and internal rapport building, technical logistics, and how to implement art-based approaches when working remotely and virtually are only some areas in need of ongoing consideration and attention. This course aims to address these sustaining needs.

What you will learn

The course will cover:

  • Safety and ethical considerations to consider when engaging with virtual environments for online art therapy, with protocol and best practice examples.
  • Ideas and suggestions of web-based digital art media programs and applications available to use in art therapy for art-making and creative expression.
  • Recommendations and hands on experientials to explore ways to use digital art media therapeutically.
  • Art-based considerations, approaches, and delivery methods to implement for online art therapy with traditional art media use or very few materials

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define safety and ethical considerations important to online art therapy.
  • Identify web-based digital art media programs and platforms for online art therapy.
  • Implement art-based approaches and media for online art therapy.
