The power of language - the words we use and the way we story people

This powerful and important workshop explores and reflects on the words we use in conversations, in therapy, in notes or recordings, and in places like meetings and client consultations.

What you will learn

We will look at the words we use to talk about people and describe them. We will think about how the way we speak can influence and impact our and others’ lens, bias, prejudice, attitude, actions, and so forth. This includes thinking about attentional and confirmation biases. We will also look at why our words can be healing or harmful; trauma-inducing or trauma-reducing.

We will think about how words can make worlds. This includes person first language, trauma-informed language, opinion-based language, the meaning behind acronyms, and much more.

By completing the course, you will:

  • increase awareness of the power and impact of language and the words we use.
  • learn new ways of framing questions and describing people from a more trauma-informed perspective.
  • think about some of the way’s language can influence our actions, feelings, and sensations; including attentional and confirmation biases.

How you will learn

Stories, anecdotes, and top tips will be shared; as well as powerful images. There will be opportunities to reflect, share thoughts, and discuss with others in the group.
